First vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s representative in the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG) Iryna Gerashchenko insists on the release of the Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was detained in Russia.

“I am shocked by the news of the arrest of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko in Russia. He works as staff reporter of Ukrinform in France. […] We are waiting for immediate statements from the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland and other structures, which are obliged to protest against the arrest of Ukrainian journalist by the Russian Federation on trumped-up charges of “espionage.” The Ukrainian government demands the immediate release of the journalist,” Gerashchenko wrote on her Facebook page on Monday.

Special correspondent of Ukrinform Roman Sushchenko was detained in Moscow on September 30. The Russian media reported about charging him in “espionage.”
