Six new cases of COVID-19 coronavirus were registered in Kyiv, brings the total in Ukraine’s capital and oblast to 9, the Public Health Centre of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine announced on March 21.
Earlier this day Kyiv city mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported that there are seven new cases in Kyiv and 10 in total.
He also noted that infected Ukrainians have recently returned from the European countries, particularly Germany and France, and two were infected locally.
Five patients were hospitalized to Oleksandrivska Clinical Hospital in Kyiv, the rest are self-isolated and remain at home under medical supervision.
According to Klitschko, three more suspected cases of the coronavirus are to be verified by laboratory tests.
As of March 21, Ukraine has 47 confirmed cases of COVID-19; three people were killed by the disease. One patient recovered and was already discharged from the hospital.
Since the infection started spreading throughout Ukraine, six oblasts – Kyiv, Chernivtsi, Zhytomyr, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Dnipro – have declared an emergency.
Starting on March 23, Kyiv will halt access to public transportation for non-critical personnel, Klitschko announced on March 21. Such restrictions do not apply for personal transport, the Kyiv mayor said.
Klitschko urged police to enforce compliance with the ongoing restrictions and asked the Ukrainian government to ensure that Ukrainians who have been evacuated from other countries stay in their homes for 14 days.
Since March 17, Ukraine has shut down the metro subways in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Dnipro – the only three cities with such transportation. It also banned domestic public transport between cities.
Moreover, restaurants, bars, gyms, salons, and shopping malls are closed along with schools.
Press service of the Ministry of Health stressed on March 21 that self-isolation is the most effective way to protect oneself from infection.
