Latvia plans to organize a large international conference on the occupation of Crimea as an example of violation of international law, the press service of the Verkhovna Rada said on Oct. 6.

“Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk met with Deputy Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Latvia Dagmara Beitnere-Le Galla, who is on an official visit to Ukraine. Together with Ambassador of Latvia to Ukraine Ilgvars Kļava, the parties agreed to coordinate efforts to hold events on the Crimea Platform. In particular, Latvia plans to organize a large international conference on the occupation of Crimea as an example of violation of international law,” the website says.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed the common historical past of the two peoples, restoration and preservation of the historical memory of the crimes of totalitarian regimes.

“We have a common past, but we also have a common European future. We are very happy and proud that we have extremely friendly and partner relations with Latvia, both at the interstate and inter-parliamentary levels,” Kondratiuk said.

The Deputy Speaker of the Seimas assured that Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity are very important for Latvia. According to her, Latvia is ready for active work within the Crimea platform.

The participants of the meeting also discussed Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine and interaction in PACE within the framework of the Baltic+ format and the intensification of Ukraine’s cooperation with the Three Seas initiative.

“We should jointly respond to the hybrid threats facing our countries and security throughout Europe. This is the need to jointly confront Nord Stream 2 as a geopolitical project of the Russian Federation,” Olena Kondratiuk said.

At the same time, the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas said that Latvia is ready for decisive actions in this direction together with Ukraine and expects appropriate steps from the Ukrainian side.
