The law “On the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language,” supported by the Verkhovna Rada and signed by parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy on May 14, has been submitted for the president’s signature.

“May 14, 2019. The law was sent to the president to be signed,” the page of draft law No. 5670-d posted on the official website of the Verkhovna Rada says.

As reported, on April 25, the Verkhovna Rada passed as a whole a draft law on the Ukrainian language, which provides for the mandatory use of the national language by government agencies, local self-government and in other spheres of public life. Corresponding bill No. 5670-d on ensuring the use of Ukrainian as the national language passed its second reading and was generally supported by 278 lawmakers at a plenary session of the parliament.

The law, with the exception of certain of its provisions, will enter into force two months after publication.
