TBILISI – U.S. lawyer Jan Sandwich will defend Georgia’s ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, Saakashvili’s lawyer Nika Gvaramia told reporters.
“We are now waiting for a lawyer from the United States who is highly qualified. He will be the main international speaker in this case,” Gvaramia said.
Saakashvili, a citizen of Ukraine, secretly arrived in Georgia on Sept. 29. He was detained in Tbilisi on Oct. 1. Saakashvili is now in prison in Rustavi.
Saakashvili is implicated in several criminal cases in Georgia. The Georgian authorities have repeatedly said they would detain him immediately after he crossed the border. Saakashvili considers his detention to be illegal and says he has been framed.
