Belarus stands ready to assume responsibility for maintaining peace in eastern Ukraine, exercise control over the Russian-Ukrainian border, and facilitate elections in Donbas, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

“We can assume responsibility for ensuring peace in the eastern regions of Ukraine and control over the Russian-Ukrainian border. And also support the organization of elections in Donbas, based on the premise that these regions are an inseparable part of Ukraine,” Lukashenko said at a Munich Security Conference Core Group Meeting in Minsk on Wednesday.

To put these proposals into practice, they need to be discussed by all parties concerned, Lukashenko said. “Let’s be honest: if we can’t get the United States to sit at the table, we are unlikely to achieve the goal,” he said.
