Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko has said there is no legal evidence to prove the guilt of second President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma in arranging the murder of journalist Georgiy Gongandze.

“At present, I have no legal evidence to prove that Kuchma himself gave an order to eliminate Gongadze,” Lutsenko said in a live TV program “Visiting Dmytro Gordon” in the evening of Jan. 21.

He added: “Unfortunately, major Melnychenko has not returned the original records from recording devices.” Lutsenko said without the records it is impossible to establish Kuchma’s guilt in this case by legal means.

As reported earlier, Gongadze went missing in Kyiv on Sept. 16, 2000. In November that year, a headless body was found in Kyiv region that, according to forensic experts, could have been Gongadze’s. In 2009, remains of a human skull were found in Kyiv region, which, according to a statement by the Prosecutor General’s Office, belonged to Gongadze.

The funeral of the murdered journalist took place in Kyiv on March 22, 2016. The people who ordered the murder have not been identified yet.
