You're reading: Man detonates grenade in Luhansk region bank

A bank visitor in the town of Starobilsk, Luhansk region, has detonated a hand grenade, Ukrainian police said.

“A man, born in 1972, detonated a hand grenade at 4:30 p.m. Kyiv time today [May 17] in the premises of a bank’s branch on Shevchenko Street in Starobilsk. The blast killed the man on the spot and inflicted various injuries on five civilians, including two bank employees and three local residents who were at the bank premises at the time. An investigative officer from the Starobilsk police department has been injured,” Tetiana Pohukai, a spokeswoman for Ukraine’s National Police branch in Luhansk region, said.

All the injured are now in hospital and being treated. According to preliminary information, their lives are not in danger.

Chiefs of the National Police’ main department, Starobilsk police department, prosecutors, officers of the SBU Security Service of Ukraine, workers of the State Emergency Service are now on the scene.

“The scene of the incident is cordoned off; investigators of the regional police department and Starobilsk police department, bomb experts are working there,” Pohukai said.
