The European Commission has confirmed that the European Union court has indeed annulled the earlier EU sanctions against former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and his son Oleksandr, however, they remain under the influence of the restrictive measures of the European Union.

“They remain subject of EU restrictive measures on the basis of a normative legal act adopted in March 2021,” the European Truth said, citing EU Foreign Minister Peter Stano at a briefing in Brussels.

He said the assets of Yanukovych are still frozen until March 6, 2022. Until the time they expire, the EU Council will decide whether to extend the sanctions or not.

“Any update will require a consensus of all member states,” Stano said.

He did not specify what consequences the court’s decision could have for the EU sanctions regimes.

Stano said the decision is taken into account, but the EU Council is analyzing its consequences.
