You're reading: Moldova reports record 296 new COVID-19 cases in past 24 hours

CHISINAU – A record daily number of new COVID-19 cases, 296, was identified in Moldova in the past 24 hours, and another four people earlier diagnosed with the novel coronavirus have died, the press service of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection told Interfax.

“A total of 1,587 tests, including 1,192 initial ones, were performed today. As a result, it was established that 296 tests returned positive results. Thus, the total case count in our country currently stands at 10,321,” the ministry said.

The new COVID-19 cases include 31 healthcare workers, among them three doctors, it said. A total of 1,827 healthcare workers have contracted coronavirus. Of them, 22 have died.

The number of new coronavirus cases recorded in Moldova on June 10 is the highest since testing began in the country on March 7. The previous record daily number of new cases, 264, was reported on June 6. Last week also saw record numbers of new cases and coronavirus-related deaths since testing was launched. According to this data, 1,449 new infections were confirmed from June 1 to June 8. A total of 1,158 new cases were registered a week earlier, on May 25 – June 1, and fewer than 1,000 cases in previous weeks.

However, despite this increase, Moldovan authorities announced that restrictions earlier imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 would be gradually lifted from June 1.
