You're reading: More than 500 parishes of Moscow patriarchate join Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Some 500 parish churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) have been switched over to the newly established Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) as of March 27, according to the website of the Religious Information Service of Ukraine. In addition, two cathedrals (Transfiguration of the Savior Cathedral in Kyiv and Vinnytsia) switched over from the UOC (MP) to the OCU.

Of the 500 parishes, 116 are in Volyn region, 77 – in Vinnytsia region, 61 – in Khmelnytsky region, 48 – in Rivne region, 47 – in Zhytomyr region, 23 – in Ternopil region, 19 in Lviv, Cherkasy and Chernivtsi regions, 14 – in Kyiv region, 13 – in Chernihiv region, 7 each in Zakarpattia and Odesa regions, 6 – in Kharkiv region, 5 each – in Ivano-Frankivsk and Poltava regions, 4 – in Mykolaiv region, 3 – in Dnipropetrovsk region, 2 each – in Kyiv, Kirovohrad and Sumy regions and 1 – in Zaporizhia region.

As reported, on Dec. 15, 2018, a Unification Council was held in Kyiv, at which the Orthodox Church of Ukraine was established, headed by Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Epiphanius (Dumenko).
