Ukraine and the United States will strengthen interparliamentary cooperation in the sphere of assistance to veterans, according to Bloc of Petro Poroshenko Bloc MP Oleksandr Tretiakov, the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament’s committee on veterans, combatants, ATO participants and people with disabilities.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the initiative of Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee of the U.S. Congress Phil Roe to strengthen partnership and cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in the field of assistance to veterans,” Tretiakov wrote on his Facebook page on March 8, while on a working trip to the United States.

“We agreed to establish an inter-committee ‘union’ for consultations, exchange of legislative initiatives for lawmaking experience. We will also involve in cooperation the experts who are needed to create an effective system for supporting veterans in Ukraine. Congressman Roe is confident that this should include the creation of a concerned ministry,” he added.

According to him, the Veterans Affairs Committee of the U.S. Congress was established in 1946 through the transfer of powers relating to veterans from other committees.

“A lot has been done over 80 years of a long journey, and there have also been mistakes. Our country has a unique opportunity to take into account the best practices, avoid mistakes and pass this journey much faster than the countries that built the system of helping veterans from scratch,” Tretiakov said.
