State-owned enterprise (SOE) Mykolaiv Shipyard, part of the Ukroboronprom state concern, is suspected of polluting the Inhul River with petroleum products.

“A large-scale leak of oil products near one of the largest shipbuilding plants in Ukraine! The State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District discovered a slick of oil products that spread along the Inhul River from the side of the Mykolaiv Shipyard. The spill area was 16,800 square meters,” head of the State Environmental Inspectorate Andriy Maliovany said on Facebook.

According to him, the results of laboratory studies of samples taken from the site of pollution confirmed the excess of background concentrations for oil products from 3.7 to 51.7 times. Also, the background concentration of oil products in the control section (500 m below the pollution site) was recorded 1.3 times higher than the norm.

At the same time, he added that, the State Environmental Inspectorate sent the materials on the fact of the spill of toxic substances to the National Police of Mykolaiv region. Law enforcers will check the involvement of the Mykolaiv Shipyard in the pollution of the Inhul River. In case of confirmation of violation of environmental legislation by the state-owned enterprise, a claim will be sent to it.

Now the inspectorate is calculating losses due to oil spills in the river.

The Mykolaiv Shipyard is part of the Marine Systems holding being created on the basis of the Ukroboronprom.
