You're reading: Nasirov says continuing case against him is attempt to isolate him before elections

Ex-head of Ukraine’s State Fiscal Service (SFS) Roman Nasirov has said the decision of Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky District Court to extend his procedural obligations in criminal proceedings is illegal and has been organized to keep him from participating in the presidential election campaign.

“My lawyers and I think the decision of the court to extend the procedural obligations is unlawful …The main reason for another unlawful court decision is that some people are trying to deprive me of the opportunity to launch a large election campaign, so I was prevented from traveling around the country and artificially isolated,” Nasirov said on his Facebook page.

Nasirov said he objected to motions made by prosecutors each time. He said he tried to convince the court of the illegality of the motions themselves and the motives for making them.

“Unfortunately, all my arguments were either ignored or interpreted by the court in a way that directly contradicts both Ukraine’s Constitution and current legislation,” Nasirov said.

“The lie that is intentionally told about my activities as SFS head is the work of my political opponents. They got scared when I started a real fight against corruption and initiated changes at the SFS. This is why they falsified the case against me. Now they try to prevent me from building an effective national organization for the elections. This shows they are afraid of me,” he said.

The ex-SFS head posted a copy of his objection to the prosecutor’s request to extend his pretrial restrictions.
