Perhaps the most prestigious magazine devoted to the advertising trade in the U.S., Adweek, devoted its latest weekly issue to Ukrainians in a show of solidarity toward the war-torn country.
The New York-based magazine said its April 25 edition was “staffed” by more than “20 Ukrainians working together from the around the world.”
Control over the publication the magazine was “handed off” to the Ukrainian staff in an “unprecedented moment” in the publication’s 43-year history, Adweek said.
The special issue is called, “On Ukraine, by Ukrainians.”
Some of the Ukrainian contributors are still based in their homeland where Russian President Vladimir Putin has waged an unprovoked war since 2014 and launched a full-scale invasion of the neighboring country on Feb. 24, killing thousands of civilians and soldiers, while razing whole towns and cities to the ground with incessant bombardment.
The issue’s lead editor was Hanna Rudenko who is the chief editor of SKVOT MAG, an online journal of Ukraine’s SKVOT school of creativity.
The magazine said all proceeds from the issue’s advertising revenue was used to pay the freelance fees for the Ukrainian staff with about $75,000 being donated to two humanitarian charities: Nova Ukraine and Ukrainian American Coordinating Council.
The magazine “cover illustration for this special issue was created by Waone Interesni Kazki (Volodymуr Manzhos), an acclaimed Ukrainian artist and muralist who creates surreal and metaphoric visual stories by fusing the aesthetics of old masters with a bold modern voice. It is the first time Waone has created a cover for a print magazine,” Adweek stated.
