You're reading: Next round of consultations between Ukraine’s Education Ministry and Hungarian community to be held in early July

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin stressed that agreements have been achieved with the Hungarian side on the implementation of the law of Ukraine on education in terms of language and extension of the transitional period of the language norm implementation.

“At first the Hungarian side insisted on returning to what it was – in fact to rewrite Article 7 of our new law on education. This … has already passed. Everyone understands that this law is aimed at helping our communities. Now we are not talking about changes in this article, but how to implement this law,” Klimkin told journalists in Truskavets (Lviv region).

According to him, for this it is necessary to increase the transitional period of the law implementation.

“We need to train teachers, change the methods … We need exchanges. We are now negotiating on exchanges [between teachers] … It is no longer a matter of softening the terms [of the language article], it concerns the issue how to implement the law,” he said.

Klimkin also announced an agreement on the next round of consultations between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Hungarian community in early July.

In general, he positively assessed the talks recently held with the Hungarian side in Zakarpattia region.

“I think that in general the negotiations were not easy, but positive. We have a positive dynamic of the dialogue,” Klimkin said.
