The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) has announced that it could register users of the Russian social network VKontakte in six months, the measure should be implemented as part of the country’s cybersecurity and information security strategy, the Suspilne publication has reported.

“According to the approved National Security Strategy of Ukraine, a new Cybersecurity Strategy of Ukraine will be developed within six months, as well as an information security strategy. Issues of creating a system for registering Ukrainian users of the Russian social network VKontakte and, if necessary, other social networks under the control of the aggressor state, will be discussed as part of the implementation of the above strategies,” the Council said in a statement.

The NSDC also said that access to Russian social networks from the territory of Ukraine poses a real threat to national security, therefore, “requires efforts to be neutralized.”

“The Russian social network VKontakte, which has been under sanctions since 2017, is one of the information and psychological means of this hybrid war, therefore the use of its resources and the distribution of relevant Russian content in the information space of Ukraine is regarded as a threat to the national security of Ukraine, which requires neutralization,” the NSDC said.
