U.S. President Barack Obama has greeted Ukrainians on the occasion of Independence Day.

The greetings were sent to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian presidential press service reported.

Independence Day is especially important when Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are under threat amid Russian aggression in the east of Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, Obama wrote in his greetings.

The U.S. president reaffirmed the United States remains committed to its obligations to stay with Ukraine amid countering the Russian aggression.

Obama also praised Ukraine for the “serious steps” it has made in fighting corruption, strengthening the rule of law and laying the foundation for economic growth.

In his words, the United States will continue to support Ukrainians in aspirations for their prosperous European future.
