You're reading: Off-duty police officer allegedly kills driver after running red light in Odesa

A 25-year old off-duty police officer allegedly caused a fatal car crash in the early hours of Sept. 18 in a suburb of the southern Black Sea port city of Odesa.

According to a statement released by the Odesa Oblast Police, the accident occurred at around 6 a.m. The unnamed officer allegedly ran a red light in a Mazda and hit a Kia driven by a man in his 60s, causing his death.

The police officer was taken to hospital with injuries to his head and chest. His blood was taken for an alcohol level check — the results of this examination are not yet known.

After all the evidence is collected, the State Investigation Bureau will take sole control of the investigation.

The police officer is suspected of violation of traffic safety rules which caused a fatality, facing 3-8 years of prison if found guilty.
