A military car transporting two Ukrainian soldiers exploded after it hit a landmine in the Donbas on Jan. 5. The explosion killed one soldier and seriously wounded another.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the GAZ-66 truck blew up on an anti-tank landmine while moving from one platoon to another in Khutir Vilniy, a town 700 kilometers southeast of Kyiv.

An investigation team has been sent to the scene to determine the exact circumstances of the explosion, the Ministry stated on Facebook on Jan. 5.

Just a day ago, on Jan. 4, two other servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were also hurt in a blast of an unidentified explosive device.

The Ukrainian army and Russian-backed militants began to disengage near the villages of Zolote, Petrivske, and Stanytsya Luhanska in November 2019. Although Ukraine and Russia agreed to a complete ceasefire during the Normandy Format summit on Dec. 9, the OSCE Mission continues to record violations regularly.

Russia’s war in eastern Ukraine started back in 2014. Over the last five years, the war has killed over 13,000 people, both civilians and combatants, and wounded as many as 30,000 people. The war displaced over one million people, and over 3.5 million living near the front line are still in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
