Over 400 Ukrainians, who came on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border on foot within two days, have been admitted to Ukraine, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba said.
“A pedestrian crossing between Hungary and Ukraine is forbidden, but our embassy in Hungary and the consulate in Nyiregyhazi managed to jointly establish an effective mechanism for returning home with the border guards of the two countries: taxis or individual carriers come from the Ukrainian side, Hungarian border guards inform Ukrainians who are waiting at the border, they get into a car, cross the border and return home. Since the evening of March 16, more than 400 Ukrainians have been returned and people continue to come,” he said on his Facebook on March 18.
According to Kuleba, Ukrainian diplomats provide assistance to the Ukrainian diplomats.
In addition, the minister said that Ukrainian citizens who were stuck in a Hungarian airport in the transit zone due to a ban on foreigners’ entry after the embassy negotiations got the opportunity to get home by bus.
However, according to the foreign minister, the problem remains on the blocked Austrian-Hungarian border, but the Ukrainian ambassadors in Austria and Hungary are looking for ways to solve it.
Kuleba also reported that the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine managed to restore the transit route for goods carriers from Italy through Slovenia.
“Trucks that are stuck in the midst of a pandemic in Italy will be able to get home despite the closed borders between EU countries,” he said, asking them to strictly adhere to specific transit rules.
Earlier, the minister said on Twitter that 174 citizens of Ukraine flew to Ukraine from Vienna on board Austrian Airlines.
