Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has sent criminal cases involving attacks on civil activist Serhiy Sternenko in Odesa to the Main Investigation Directorate of the SBU State Security Service to check information about the possible involvement of local authorities and police.
The PGO says on its website these cases should be investigated by one investigating authority to ensure an impartial and quick investigation of all the circumstances of the attacks.
The PGO is providing procedural guidance in three criminal proceedings on the facts of attacks on Sternenko, and in another indictment against a suspected attacker sent to the court.
“In one of the proceedings, an attack on the activist and the bodily harm of two persons are investigated. In another, the murder of one of the attackers and the infliction of bodily harm are investigated. The criminal proceeding on activist receiving light injuries and damage to his property is still under investigation. The pretrial investigation into the fact that a firearm was used to inflict bodily harm to Sternenko was completed and the indictment of attempted murder was sent to Odesa’s Prymorsky District Court,” the PGO said.
The attacks on Sternenko should also be seen in the broad context of attacks on other activists committed during the same period in Odesa, the PGO said.
“The PGO will inform the public about the investigation of these notorious proceedings within the framework of the law,” its website said.
