You're reading: Poland, UK offer new format of negotiations on settlement Donbas conflict

Poland and the United Kingdom have suggested an alternative embodiment of the negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Donbas to the Ukrainian side, but the final decision rests with Kyiv, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Witold Waszczykowski said.

“We have not agreed to the new format, but, of course, as I said, we will evaluate the results of the implementation of the Minsk agreements, as well as provide an assessment of Normandy format […] We have hope for the opportunity to open a discussion about the new resolution format [the situation in Donbas]. But the solution definitely rests with Pavlo [Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin], President Poroshenko and the Ukrainian authorities,” Waszczykowski said during a joint press conference with Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin and British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson in Kyiv on March 1.

He noted that the British and Polish sides took the initiative, but the decision on the best option on the conflict settlement in Donbas is still with the Ukrainian side.

Waszczykowski stressed that it is important to resolve the conflict by any means.

In his turn Klimkin noted that this meeting does not mean the beginning of the negotiations in a new format. “When three friends meet, get together – this is not necessarily the formal start of a new format, but it is certainly the beginning of the new joint efforts,” the minister said.
