The police are considering three possible causes for the wildfires in Novoaidarsky district, Luhansk region, the press service of the National Police of Ukraine has said.
“Three main versions of ignition causes are being considered: influence of abnormally high air temperature and weather conditions, mishandling of fire or an attempted arson from hooligan or other motives. However, the final cause will be established only when all necessary examinations are carried out,” Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko said during a meeting of the emergency headquarters in Luhansk region.
According to preliminary information, the wildfire affected a total area of 5,000 hectares. A criminal case has been opened under Part 2 of Article 270 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
“Our main task today is to rescue people and prevent pillage. We have set up additional mobile police groups which are patrolling these areas,” Klymenko said.
