You're reading: Police detain 8 people with knives, pepper sprays in central Kyiv

Kyiv police on June 5 detained eight young people, who attempted to prevent an announced public event; arrests were made on Hrushevskoho Street, police said.

According to law enforcement agents, pepper sprays and knives were seized from the young people, who were detained. Police are making efforts to find out who they are and what kind of motive was behind their behavior.

“Today, representatives of a civil society organization announced a mass public event in front of the headquarters of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Consequently, the law enforcement authorities tightened security measures. To ensure public safety and order, policemen took preventive measures on suspicious and aggressive individuals, who are not members of the civil society organization,” the PR department of Kyiv police said in a statement on June 5.

Police officers searched such individuals to find several pepper sprays and knives on them, which were seized. Eight aggressive young people, who attempted to obstruct the mass events, were detained, it said.

Police officers are talking to the detainees, trying to determine all circumstances and motives of such behavior. After their identities and motives are checked, the young people’s actions will be assessed from legal standpoint, police said.
