KHARKIV – According to preliminary information, a grenade was detonated on Jan. 29 morning in Kharkiv near the Brusnychka supermarket, head of the Kharkiv Regional Police Oleh Bekh has said.

“Experts believe that it could have been an attack hand grenade. They found a large ball bearing near the grenade, so we think the attack could have been calculated to cause greater damage,” Bekh told journalists. He added that a woman injured in the blast works as a cleaning lady at the nearby drugstore located in the same building.

“After she finished her cleaning work, she walked down the stairs and saw a small package. She asked her grandson to make way so she could take a look at it. That’s when she saw it contained a metal object, which she grabbled. She dropped it, and then it detonated,” Bekh said, adding investigators are looking into several motives for the crime.

The cleaning lady was wounded and hospitalized, but there is no threat to her life.
