Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has had a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, who has visited Ukraine for the first time, and asked him to pay special attention to the problems the Crimean Tatars face in Crimea temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation.
“We are pleased with the level of Ukraine’s cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and thank you for your strong support of our country in this difficult time,” Poroshenko said.
As reported on the official website of the president, in the course of the meeting the president expressed hope that the visit of the High Commissioner to Ukraine will allow him to assess “the complexity of the humanitarian situation in Donbas.”
In his turn Grandi noted that it stands to reason that he carried out his visit to Ukraine in the first year after his election to the post of the UN High Commissioner.
“We attach significant importance to the situation in your country and the role we can play in resolving respective problems. This visit is also important because we can bring information about challenges of Ukraine to the world, “Grandi told the Ukrainian president.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees underscored the efforts of the Ukrainian authorities aimed at ensuring the rights and meeting the needs of IDPs.
Grandi congratulated the president of Ukraine on the third anniversary of the Revolution of Dignity.
According to the press service, the last visit of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to Ukraine took place 22 years ago.
