Unreformed Ukrainian courts of first instance could award compensation to former owner of PrivatBank Ihor Kolomoisky in connection with the bank’s nationalization, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has stated.

“We have a huge number of proceedings on PrivatBank. Moreover, the lion’s share [of them] is in unreformed courts of first instance. Because when the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine and the High Council of Justice were busy forming the High Anti-Corruption Court, of course, the reboot of the first level courts was delayed. And today they are de facto not reformed. Unfortunately, anything can happen there,” he said in an interview with Radio NV (Novoye Vremia), asked about the possibility of a court decision on compensation.

The head of state noted that on the eve of the bank’s nationalization there were risks for more than 20 million citizens who had deposits and accounts in the bank. According to him, this is a matter of national security.

Poroshenko explained that because of the situation in PrivatBank, the losses of the state ranged from Hr 150 billion to Hr 180 billion.

“If you think that in these conditions Petro Poroshenko should improve relations because of blackmailing over the so-called media attack – from Channel 1+1 – then no one will ever blackmail the president. And now the activities of this channel have nothing to do with journalism,” the president of Ukraine said.
