You're reading: Poroshenko demands investigation into illegal elections in Ukraine

Holding illegal elections to the Russian State Duma on the territory of Ukraine is unacceptable and requires an investigation by law enforcement agencies, fifth president, leader of the European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko said.

“I fully support the proposals of the majority of the factions that were voiced on the immediate consideration of the Verkhovna Rada resolution on non-recognition of the elections in Russia due to their holding on the territory of the annexed Republic of Crimea. According to the Russian authorities, over 200,000 Ukrainian citizens of Donbas, who had their passports stuck in, were tightened, including through the electronic voting mechanism, for these illegal elections,” the party’s press service said, citing Poroshenko.

Poroshenko said this shows a “policy of double standards.”

“I would like to remind you that during my tenure, on my instructions, it was forbidden to hold fake elections of Russia on the territory of Ukraine. Then suddenly the President’s Office, the authorities, and individual representatives of Servants of the People from parliament allow these elections to be held on the territory of consular and diplomatic institutions in Ukraine. Now how are you going to appeal to the world community not to recognize these elections when you allow them to be held by your order?” Poroshenko said.

The politician said he requires an investigation into how the illegal elections were held on the territory of Ukraine.
