Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko counts on support for Ukraine’s initiative to introduce UN peacekeepers to Donbas at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

“I am leaving for New York late this week, where a meeting of the UN General Assembly will be held. And I plan to take part in a meeting of the UN Security Council, at which we will raise the issue of UN peacekeepers who should ensure the implementation by the Russian Federation of the obligations undertaken in Minsk. But first of all, in a simple language, they should ensure peace in the Ukrainian land and political and diplomatic means for liberating the territories occupied by Russians… I hope that as of today the initiative of Ukraine regarding peacekeepers is supported by everybody,” Poroshenko said, attending the training of the Ukrainian national team for participation in the Invictus Games international sports competition in Kyiv.

According to the president, he hopes for a “coordinated influence” on Russia’s position so that Russia also accept the idea of introducing peacekeepers and “stop the war in Donbas.”

Poroshenko added that as part of his trip to the United States for participation in the session of the UN General Assembly, he will also hold meetings with the U.S. military and members of the U.S. Department of Defense.
