Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said his hour-long meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump was productive.
“I was extremely impressed by the support of both my speech at the UN Security Council and the General Assembly. You see the focus on Ukraine among the world leaders was extremely high, including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite and a large number of world leaders who today… support our just struggle to liberate the Ukrainian land from the Russian aggressor, from the Russian invader. An extremely important role was undoubtedly played by the meeting with our partner – the U.S. president, which has just finished,” Poroshenko told reporters after a meeting with Trump in New York on September 21.
According to Poroshenko, his meeting with Trump there was also attended by the U.S. president’s team, including Vice President Michael Pence, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker. “There was a very lively detailed discussion concerning the future aspects of cooperation between Ukraine and the United States,” he said.
According to Poroshenko, the meeting with Trump lasted for an hour.
At the beginning of the meeting, the U.S. president recalled the recent meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart in the White House. ” We spent some time recently in the White House, and I know you’ve made good progress since then – a lot of progress, actually,” Trump said. The U.S. president added that despite difficulties Ukraine is “making it better and better on a daily basis.”
Poroshenko expressed condolences and solidarity with the American people over the consequences of Hurricane Irma, the Ukrainian president’s press service reported.
“And this is, again, the symbol that we welcome American companies in the Ukrainian market, and creating hundreds of thousands of jobs both in Ukraine and the U.S. And this is really a delivery from effective cooperation between our nations,” the Ukrainian president said.
For his part, Trump said: “But companies are going very strongly right now into the Ukraine. They see a tremendous potential there, so take good care of them.”
