Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has considered an electronic petition on unblocking the Russian social networking service VKontakte in Ukrainian territory and turned it down.

“I consider it impossible to support the electronic petition on unblocking the Internet resource VKontakte,” Poroshenko said in a reply to the petition published on the presidential website on Friday.

“Being guided by the priority of Ukraine’s national interests and considering real threats to national security and stability in society, the encroachment on state sovereignty and territorial integrity and territorial claims and interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs on Russia’s part, intelligence and sabotage activities by Russian special services, infringement on the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens and attempts to manipulate public conscience, the application of special economic and restrictive measures to the Russian holding Mail.ru Group and other Russian Internet companies is an appropriate and lawful measure today,” Poroshenko said.
