President of the European Council Charles Michel arrived in Kyiv for the Ukraine-EU summit, visited Babyn Yar on October 11, where last week there were commemorative events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the tragedy, according to the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center.
Michel, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will represent the EU at the summit in Kyiv on Tuesday.
The President of the Council of Europe expressed regret that he could not come at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and take part in the official ceremony of memory of the victims in Babyn Yar on October 6.
Michel attended the Mirror Field audiovisual installation, the Glimpse of the Past series of installations, the symbolic synagogue Place for Reflection, and the Crystal Wall of Crying by artist Marina Abramović. These objects, along with Kurhan, which will be constructed by the end of the year, will form the first stage of the memorial in Babyn Yar.
The President of the European Council lit a candle near the Menorah monument and, together with a rabbi, deputy head of the Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, Raphael Rutman, in the symbolic synagogue of prayer, paid tribute to the memory of those killed in the Babyn Yar tragedy.
