Dr. Roman Petryshyn, a leading member of Canada’s Ukrainian diaspora community, was named to the Order of Canada yesterday – one of the most prestigious awards a civilian can earn.
There are few names as prominent among Canada’s Ukrainian diaspora community as Dr. Roman Petryshyn.
The academic has spent his career helping to develop many of the country’s most important diaspora organisations, including the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, the Ontario and Alberta provincial councils of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Alberta Council of Ukrainian Arts, the Ukrainian Foundation for College Education, and the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre at MacEwan University, where he has worked for the last nearly 30 years.
His research has focused on the integration of Ukrainian minorities in Canada and he edited the influential ‘Changing Realities: Social Trends Among Ukrainian Canadians’.
The Order of Canada is the country’s second-highest honour for merit and is awarded for outstanding merit or distinguished service to individuals who make a major difference to Canada through lifelong contributions to their fields of work.
“It’s both gratifying and humbling to know that people I have worked with over the years felt that I qualify to be a candidate for such an honour,’ said Dr. Petryshyn in a statement to MacEwan University.
“It also means that they continue to believe in the ideas of diversity, equity and community-university engagement that we pursued together.”
