You're reading: Prosecutor’s office opens case for attempting to burn Ukraine’s flag in Donbas

The prosecutor’s office of Donetsk region has begun a criminal investigation into the abuse of the state flag of Ukraine by two young people in the village of Pervomayske, Yasynuvatsky district.

On August 8, the police received a message that a partially burnt flag of Ukraine was found in the village of Pervomayske on the ground in front of the building of the Leisure Center, the press service of the Prosecutor’s Office of Donetsk region reported on Facebook on August 14.

“During the pretrial investigation it was established that an 18-year-old local resident, being in a state of intoxication, tore off the flag from the building’s flagstaff and threw it to the ground, and a 15-year-old girl who was walking beside tried to set it on fire,” it was reported.

The information on this fact is included in the Single Register of Pretrial Investigations on the grounds of a criminal offense under Part 1 of Article 388 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (outrage against state symbols). The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of a fine of up to 50 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens or arrest for up to six months or imprisonment for up to three years.
