You're reading: Rada registers bill on termination of Kharkiv agreements

The Verkhovna Rada has registered the bill “On denunciation of the Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the stay of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine.”

The card of bill No. 0095, registered on March 12, appeared on the parliament’s website.

The authors of the document are members of the Servant of the People faction Oleh Dunda and Oleksandr Aliksiychuk.

The explanatory note says that the Kharkiv agreements were signed under the pretext of providing Ukraine with a discount on natural gas. At the same time, the authors of the bill note, no discounts were provided – on the contrary, Russia artificially created and accumulated Ukraine’s debt to it, and then, on account of its repayment, including allegedly by granting a discount, the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation was actually stationed on Ukrainian territory free of charge.

“As a result, already in 2014, servicemen of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, in cooperation with other Russian units, carried out a military occupation and subsequent annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, which led to dire consequences in the form of a violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the document reads.

“Considering the above said, there is an urgent need to denounce the Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the stay of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, signed in Kharkiv on April 21, 2010, and ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on April 27, 2010, as such that contradicts the national interests of Ukraine,” declare the authors of the bill.

The text of the bill provides for the denunciation of the Kharkiv agreements, and will reduce the risks associated with the national security of Ukraine.
