You're reading: Rada supports bill on bringing military ranks to NATO standards

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted at first reading bill No. 2247 on Amending Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Concerning the Military Ranks of Military, which provides for bringing the current system of military ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in accordance with NATO standards.

The bill at the first reading was supported by 267 deputies on Dec. 19.

The document amends statutes of the Armed Forces and adapts them to the norms of the armies of the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.

In particular, now the colonel general and army general of Ukraine will disappear from the list of ranks of the Armed Forces: the first will be called “general,” and the second will disappear altogether. The new rank of brigadier general will be introduced next after the colonel in the military hierarchy, following which there will be a major general by seniority.

In the Navy, the rank of brigadier general will correspond to the rank of commander admiral, also introduced by bill No. 2247.
