The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline on the bottom of the Baltic Sea poses a serious threat not only to the EU and Ukraine, but also to the stability of the situation in the region, said Verkhovna Rada Chairman Dmytro Razumkov.

“An important aspect is the issue of security, including environmental, economic and energy security. We consider Nord Stream 2 a rather serious threat not only for the European Union, not only for Ukraine, but also for stabilizing the situation in the region, because we remember very well how the Russian Federation uses it. And, unfortunately, for the Russian Federation this is not an economic, but a political project, which can lead to putting pressure on European states,” Razumkov said at a joint briefing with Chairperson of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen on May 12.

In turn, the chairman of the Lithuanian Seimas stressed that Lithuania is a friend and partner of Ukraine, which unconditionally recognizes Ukrainian independence and sovereignty recognized by the norms of international law.

“We talked about the Ukrainian ambition regarding participation in the projects of the European Union and NATO, and we understand that this is the goal that Ukraine and the Ukrainian people are striving to achieve, so they will receive constant, stable support from us,” she said.

According to the speaker, Lithuania constantly condemns Russian aggression in Ukraine at international platforms and forums.

“We are doing this so that the issue of Russian aggression is always in the foreground in political urgency. I also want to emphasize that on April 27, a resolution was adopted in the Lithuanian Seimas, which condemns Russian aggression against Ukraine and determines that this is unacceptable given the international politics, international law. We also note that in the future this will negatively affect the security of the entire European Union,” said Čmilytė-Nielsen.
