You're reading: Rescuers complete work on liquidation of consequences of Odesa College fire

The State Emergency Service announces the completion on Saturday, December 14, of work to eliminate the consequences of the fire in the educational building of Odesa College of Economics, Law and the Hotel and Restaurant Business.

“At 08:00 on December 14, the work on liquidation of the consequences of the emergency situation related to the fire in the educational building of the Odesa College of Economics, law and the Hotel and Restaurant Business was completed. In total, about 3,124 cubic meters of building structures were removed from the beginning of the demolition,” the message said.

Thus, 182 people and 26 pieces of equipment were involved in the work, of which 68 from the State Emergencies Ministry personnel and eight pieces of equipment.

As reported, a fire broke out on the third floor of a 6-story educational building in the Odesa College of Economics, Law and Hotel and Restaurant Business at 10:12 on December 4, the area of which reached 4,000 square meters. At 14:18, the fire was localized but not extinguished as of the morning of December 5.

A criminal case was opened under Part 2 of Article 270 (violation of fire safety requirements established by law) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. December 5 and December 6 were announced mourning days in Odesa.

On December 12, the State Emergency Service reported that as of 07:00 the death toll of fire victims at Odesa College increased to 16 people.

“During the search, the bodies of 14 dead were found (the bodies of nine people were not identified). In total, 16 people died as a result of the fire, 30 people were injured, eight people remain in hospitals,” the service’s website said.
