You're reading: Savchenko Party decides at congress to run for parliament

Nadiia Savchenko’s Social and Political Platform has held a congress in front of the Verkhovna Rada building, during which the party has decided to participate in the early parliamentary elections.

The 12th congress of Nadiia Savchenko’s Social and Political Platform is “open in all respects,” says an announcement on MP Nadiia Savchenko’s Facebook page.

“Today we are here, and on July 21, 2019, we are entering the Verkhovna Rada. We are becoming full members of it, we’re becoming members of parliament. Our political force occupies a worthy place among those who will be represented in the Verkhovna Rada,” Savchenko said at the congress, which was streamed live on her page on Facebook on Wednesday.

The congress approved lists of candidates for members of parliament from the Nadiia Savchenko’s Social and Political Platform Party.

Savchenko also reported that her sister, Vira Savchenko, will head the party’s election headquarters for the period, and Tatiana Protorchenko will be its speaker. Nadiia Savchenko herself will be the leader of the party.

She also mentioned about 10 names from the election list of the party, as well as those who will run for parliament in majority districts.

Savchenko is suspected of committing crimes under Part 1 of Article 109 (actions aimed at forcibly changing or overthrowing the constitutional system or seizing state power), Part 1 of Article 14, Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 109 (actions aimed at forcibly changing or overthrowing the constitutional system or at seizing state power), Part 1 of Article 14, Part 2 of Article 28, Article 112 (encroachment on the life of a state or public figure), Part 1 of Article 14, Part 3 of Article 258 (terrorist act), Part 1 of Article 258-3 (the creation of a terrorist group or a terrorist organization) and Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons, military supplies or explosives) of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.

Savchenko has been in pretrial custody since March 23, 2018.

On April 12, 2019, Kyiv’s Court of Appeals sent the Savchenko-Ruban case to Brovary City District Court in Kyiv Region.

On the night of April 16, Savchenko and Former head of the Center for the Liberation of Prisoners “Officers’ Corps” Volodymyr Ruban were released from custody, since at midnight from April 15 to 16 their detention in custody expired and was not extended.
