The State Security Service arrested two of its own officers who allegedly attacked Ukrainian border guards close to the border with Russia in Sumy Oblast on the night of July 18.
The State Border Service had reported that three unknown assailants fought and injured two border guards and took away their weapons.
The border guards are in stable condition. The stolen weapons have been confiscated and returned to the State Border Service.
The alleged culprits may face up to 15 years in prison. They are charged with theft, misappropriation, robbery of firearms and ammunition, and threats or violence against law enforcement officials.
“For the duration of the pre-trial investigation, both assailants, who are employees of the Service, have been suspended from work,” the SBU told the Interfax-Ukraine.
