You're reading: Stoltenberg to discuss Black Sea security in Tbilisi in early October

A delegation of the North Atlantic Council led by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will visit Georgia on October 3-4, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai said.

Cooperation with Georgia on Black Sea security will be high on the agenda, Appathurai told the Georgian television channel Imedi on July 31.

The visit will be a good opportunity to discuss Black Sea security, which is prioritized by NATO and actively involves Georgia, he said.

Georgia would be admitted to NATO at some point, he said, but could not name the exact date. Reforms must continue, and geopolitical aspects must be addressed in order to do so, he said.

As for Moscow’s negative reaction to NATO-Georgia relations, Appathurai said Russia had a wrong idea of that relationship. It is not that NATO is spreading towards Russia’s border; it is that countries bordering Russia want rapprochement with the alliance, he said.

NATO countries bordering Russia, such as Norway, have no problems with Moscow, he added.
