Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga has thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine’s leadership for allowing humanitarian aid intended for the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas to transit through Ukrainian territory.
“Mr. President, I’d like to sincerely thank you and your government for continuing to allow Swiss humanitarian aid to be delivered to territories that are not controlled by the Ukrainian government today. This demonstrates your commitment to humanitarian principles and your understanding of the needs of the people in this region,” Sommaruga said in the Donetsk region on Thursday, while visiting the Water of Donbas enterprise together with Zelensky.
The relief supplies Switzerland will hand over to Ukraine on Thursday will not be the last such aid, and another large shipment is expected to arrive in September, she said.
“Switzerland is the depository state of the Geneva Conventions, and it will continue doing everything possible to ensure the observance of international humanitarian law in this conflict and also to ensure that the civilian population and facilities of humanitarian infrastructure have the appropriate protection,” Sommaruga said.
