You're reading: Tymoshenko: President has enough powers to reduce tariffs

Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has said that the Ukrainian president has enough powers to reduce tariffs for utility services, and a resolution of the government led by Volodymyr Groysman on an unreasonable increase in natural gas prices must be cancelled, the party’s press service has reported.

“The head of state has two options. (The first one is) to impose a veto with his decree on government resolutions that violate either people’s rights or laws. The resolution of the Groysman-Poroshenko government to raise tariffs is unreasonable, and therefore the president has the constitutional right to stop illegal price increases, especially when the price of gas in world markets has almost halved,” Tymoshenko said on the 112 Ukraine television channel on Wednesday, June 12.

According to her, the second step that Ukrainian President Zelenskiy can take to reduce tariffs for the population should be the appointment of members of the National Commission for the State Regulation of Energy, Housing and Utilities Services (NCER), the body that sets the tariffs.

“In this way he will create the conditions to set the right tariffs for our gas,” Tymoshenko said.

According to her, the president has an algorithm of actions.

“If he wants to reduce tariffs, he has all the answers to these questions,” Tymoshenko said.
