From the archives: Revelations in Pandora Papers likely to lead nowhere
International teams of journalists from many news organizations investigated a major leak of records showing the secret and complicated finances of world leaders and rich businesspeople. Called the Pandora Papers investigation, journalists exposed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s web of financial transactions with billionaire oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky and others. Some experts say the excessive secrecy and complexity may signal tax evasion, money laundering and unexplained wealth that the holders want to hide. Other experts say that it’s a normal business practice to have international holdings. But if history is any guide, no one in a position of authority in Ukraine (or elsewhere) will conduct a proper investigation on the origins and legitimacy of the billions of dollars. Similar investigations have been conducted by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, a Kyiv Post partner.
