Ukraine marks the 20th anniversary of journalist Georgiy Gongadze’s murder

Four police officers were convicted in the kidnapping and killing. Interior Minister Yuriy Kravchenko was killed from two gunshots to the head on March 4, 2005. Ex-President Leonid Kuchma, implicated on audiotapes in ordering the journalist to be silenced, no longer faces any criminal charges in the murder and has denied any involvement. Gongadze was a pioneer of digital and investigative journalism in independent Ukraine, co-founding the Ukrainska Pravda news site. Read about the Sept. 16, 2020 commemoration.

Kyiv Post 25th Anniversary Series — From The Archives

Dying For TruthSince 1991, when Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union, more than 50 journalists have been killed across the country. Most of the crimes have been poorly investigated and the killers remain unpunished. “Dying for Truth” tells these stories. The project is supported by the Justice for Journalists Foundation.
