The office of President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on March 11 that Ukraine and Russia are negotiating a new prisoner swap Ukraine. Officials reportedly met in Minsk to discuss a finalized list of prisoners to be included in the exchange.

Read the Kyiv Post’s coverage of the last prisoner swap, which took place on Dec. 29, 2019 with 76 political prisoners released to Ukraine by Russian-backed militants. That exchange was not without controversywith protests sparked by the release of former Berkut officers accused of killing protesters during the EuroMaidan Revolution.

The last prisoner exchange before that, in September 2019, included the release of 35 political prisoners. Though in that case criticism centered on the release to Russia of a witness to the 2014 MH17 plane crash. Watch our video dispatch from the time, “Free at last: Ukrainian prisoners return home.”
