FROM THE ARCHIVES

On March 11, Ukraine sent its first shipment of used batteries to the European Union for recycling. The project organized by the Dnipro-based non-profit “Batareyky Zdavaites!” (or Batteries Give In!).

Approximately one million batteries will be sent to the GreenWEEE recycling plant in Romania in the first shipment, which Batteries Give In! estimates will save 1600 hectares of land from permanent contamination.

Read more about the program, which began in 2013 by providing cardboard recycling boxes for battery recycling. As Ukraine lacks infrastructure to process the used batteries, they accumulated in warehouses before the organization arranged for their transport to processing facilities in the EU.
