One Ukrainian woman and her seven children were evacuated from a refugee camp in northeastern Syria on June 16.
The family was transported from Syria to Erbil, Iraq and then took a special flight to Kyiv.
“As a result of another multi-part operation in close cooperation with other Ukrainian bodies and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, today we managed to return another family of our compatriots,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzheppar.
The Ukrainian woman, who goes by the pseudonym Amina for security reasons, will now go through rehabilitation.
Amina and her children spent several years in prison-like refugee camps in northeastern Syria “in appalling, inhumane conditions where the value of life is worthless,” Dzheppar wrote on Facebook.
Last December, Ukraine evacuated two women and seven children from Syrian refugee camps.
Nine more Ukrainian women and 23 children remain in Syrian camps Roj and Al-Hawl and wish to be evacuated.
Roj and Al-Hawl are Kurdish-run refugee camps that welcome families of militants who fought for the notorious terror group Islamic State and want to flee its territory.
Many of the Ukrainians there are likely wives and children of dead or imprisoned Islamic State militants, some of whom are also Ukrainian men.
Before and after their evacuation, Ukrainian citizens are investigated for their potential involvement in terrorist activity.
“One of the main principles of President Volodymyr Zelensky is the unconditional protection of Ukrainian citizens, wherever they may be,” said Deputy Head of the Office of the President Roman Mashovets.
“If a Ukrainian gets into trouble, the state will do everything to save them and bring them home”.
