The bone marrow transplantation with unrelated donor from an unrelated donor was at first made in Ukraine. The surgery was done in the National Specialized Children’s Hospital Okhmatdyt, the founder of the IDonor, the national platform of donors, Iryna Zaslavets has said.
“In Ukraine, bone marrow was transplanted from an unrelated donor to a boy Nazarchyk. He is near one year old. And a German citizen shared his cells with him,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
The bone marrow was transported by DHL Express Ukraine. The special container was delivered by a cargo plane.
On April 1, transplantation was performed by the head of the bone marrow transplantation and intensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy department of the Okhmatdyt hospital Oleksandr Lysytsia.
“Since then, we kept everything a secret, waiting for the bone marrow to work. And then it finally happened! Nazarchyk is doing well, he is gaining weight,” Zaslavets said.
